God of the Possible

“For with God nothing shall be impossible.”
Luke 1:37 (KJV)

Now here’s the situation: Joseph had died and a new king had come to power in Egypt who didn’t know him. The children of Israel had grown in number to the extent that the land of Egypt was filled with them. The Pharaoh was worried that these people were becoming far too numerous and potentially could join with Egypt’s enemies in an alliance against him. So he oppressed the Israelites with forced labour and as a form of population control every new born Hebrew baby boy was to be drowned in the Nile.

The situation was dire but God had a plan. He was going to rescue the Israelites from their oppression, but how was he going to do it? Raise up a military leader from within the Israelites? Inspire a foreign nation to invade Egypt and free the captives? No! He sent a baby boy into the land where they were killing baby boys. How bizarre. A baby is going to free God’s people; how is that possible?

Now here’s the situation: In Garden of Eden mankind disobeyed God—our first parents sinned by eating from the forbidden tree. As result mankind fell and Adam’s decision had huge consequences for all human beings. Sin and death passed into the human race and as a result all in Adam die because the result of sin is death.

The situation is dire but God has a plan. He is going to rescue mankind from their oppression, but how is he going to do it? Raise up a military Messiah to beat us into submission? Send an army of angels to free us from our captivity to sin and death? No! He sent a baby, clothed in frail humanity. How bizarre. A baby is going to free God’s children; how is that possible?

God delights in these situations to demonstrate that he is in control and that nothing is too hard for him to accomplish. He often provides answers to our problems in ways that we don’t expect and in his perfect timing.

It would take time for Moses to grow up and be ready to lead the Children of Israel out of bondage. It would also take time for Jesus to grow up, to live a perfect sinless life and lead us out of bondage through his death on the cross. At just the right time, Jesus was born of Mary to save all people from their sins.

Bizarre! Impossible!
Not for the God of the possible.
God has seen the distress of mankind; he has heard our cry and sent us a baby. God in the flesh! Let’s join with Mary by praising the Lord and rejoicing in God our Saviour.

Prayer
Father, thank you that you have seen our plight and that you love us so much you sent your only Son to make possible our full and complete salvation. We praise your name and rejoice in God our Saviour.
Amen
