Serenity

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the centre of your life…Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”
Philippians 4:6-7 & 9 (MSG)

According to Wikipedia there were 18 major ‘Aviation accidents and incidents’ in 2014, taking many lives and causing millions of pounds worth of damage, but no one got angry with and blamed the laws of aero and thermo-dynamics for the disasters!

God set in motion the many scientific, psychological and spiritual laws that govern human life.  Why is it then, that we get angry with God and say, “Why does God allow disease, damage, distress and disaster,” when we break these laws?

We need to try to learn of and work within God’s laws, and pray for his forgiveness and mercy when we break them, whether inadvertently and ignorantly, or consciously.  Whether we are healed and protected, or allowed to suffer, if we place our lives and destiny into God’s hands, all that we experience will ultimately be a blessing.  Sometimes perhaps a blessing in the disguise of trials, as scripture says in Hebrews 12:4-11, “In this all-out match against sin, others have suffered far worse than you, to say nothing of what Jesus went through—all that bloodshed! So don’t feel sorry for yourselves. Or have you forgotten how good parents treat children, and that God regards you as his children? My dear child, don’t shrug off God’s discipline, but don’t be crushed by it either. It’s the child he loves that he disciplines; the child he embraces, he also corrects.  God is educating you; that’s why you must never drop out. He’s treating you as dear children. This trouble you’re in isn’t punishment; it’s training, the normal experience of children. Only irresponsible parents leave children to fend for themselves. Would you prefer an irresponsible God? We respect our own parents for training and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God’s training so we can truly live? While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God’s holy best. At the time, discipline isn’t much fun. It always feels like it’s going against the grain. Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it’s the well-trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God.”

Continuing from the header scripture, the Apostle Paul goes on to say in Philippians 4:11-13, “I’ve learned by now to be quite content, whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.”

Prayer
Pray with me the ‘Serenity Prayer’: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Amen
