The Transparency of God’s Grace

“He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.”
Exodus 2:12 (ESVUK)

We live, supposedly, in an age of transparency. But how transparent are we, both with each other and with ourselves?

When Moses saw an Egyptian beat one of his fellow Hebrews, he became so blinded with rage that he thought no one saw him kill the offending Egyptian. Later we find out that Moses was wrong. One of his own people had seen him. What’s more, of course, God saw what he did.

Jesus said some frightening things about transparency. He explained that he knew the secret things in the hidden corners of our hearts, and that all our actions and thoughts are visible to the Spirit of God. In spite of how transparent we are to him, God loves us and sent his Son to die for us and to give us the gift of eternal life.

The wonderful thing about grace is that God, being fully aware of our tendency to sin and of our potential for evil and for negativity, covered the magnitude of our sins through the cross of Jesus. We may try in vain to hide our sins just like Moses tried to hide his by burying the Egyptian in the sand, but the remarkable thing is that our gracious God, who knows each of us completely, in the abundance of his love has buried all our sins and the penalty for their committal in the grave of Jesus.

Thus through Jesus we no longer dwell in the darkness, but we live transparently in his light. Paul put it this way: “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

Prayer
Help us, Holy Father, to live transparently in Jesus, who is the Light, and thank you that your forgiving grace has covered our sins. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
