Priorities

“…the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.”
Mark 4:19 (ESV)

In our local congregation each week they have Young People’s Church during the sermon time. I would like to share with you the report that the teacher, Peter Beardsmore, sent to me to go onto our Church website:

Today the young people took it in turns to read out loud the story of the good Samaritan and we discussed how it would be told today in a 21st century setting. Then we looked at the account of Mary and Martha and how Jesus had gently explained that there are more vital things than food preparation.

We then conducted an experiment where we counted how many new potatoes we could fit in a large glass jar. It held 13 when it was full. We then found we could still fit in a full packet of dried black-eyed beans until they reached the top. We then found we could fit in half of a large bag of table salt. Even though full to the top, we could then gently pour in half a litre of water. We pretended it was our life, and the things we spend our time on. The potatoes represented the most important things we couldn’t live without, on down to the smallest things. The young people chose the order of priority. The things of less importance like computer games were like the salt and water. You can fit them in after the big things are done, but if you fill your time with the salt, you will not have time for the most important things. Our jar, when full contained the ingredients for a nourishing meal, if cooked. If we had put the salt in first, it would be useless for anything except maybe defrosting the path in the winter.”

What a valuable lesson for us all!  So this week remember to put the important things first in your life.  As it says in Matthew 6:33, “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you!”

Prayer
Help us, God, to remember that you are more important than any computer games!
Amen
