Destiny

“’For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,’ says the Lord, ‘thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.’”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)

The world mourns with France following the horrific events of the evening of 13 November 2015.  During the Memorial Service two weeks later, President Francois Hollande spoke about the tragic loss of 130 lives due to terrorism.  He said that 130 lives were destroyed, we would hear their laughter no more and their destinies were lost.  Few will ever forget the horror of that fateful day – most of all the survivors.

Tragedy stalks the world, God’s word warned us in 2 Timothy 3:1, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come.”  Nations are in a state of high alert and people are tense.  Yet still nations do not turn to God – we are self-reliant.  The latter has not proved infallible, whereas we Christians know that God is.  God takes positively no pleasure in these pointless deaths (2 Peter 3:9).

However I wish to return to President Hollande’s comment on the victims, that ‘their destinies are lost.’  Without any disrespect intended, I take issue with that remark. Jesus Christ came to this earth to give us a future. In Titus 1:2 we read of the “hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.”  This is our destiny.  Thanks to God’s grace, the future is bright, if we follow Jesus.  The psalmist recorded the solution “Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright; For the future of that man is peace.” (Psalm 37:37)

My plea to the nations – turn to your great God and your future will be peace.

Prayer
Merciful and loving God, thy kingdom come, when blood will be shed no more and fear will no longer stalk our streets. Thank you for your infinite love and patience.
Amen
