Think On These Things

The Ninth & last in a Series on Philippians 4:8

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

Some children like to ask “why?” all the time and some parents at some point come to the exasperated answer of “because I said so!” Neither actions are particularly bad where God’s word is concerned. We can look at the above scripture and ask why should we think on these things? And hopefully, over the last few studies we have come across an answer other than just because God says so!  We can see the importance of filling our heart with the right things as we have to guard what goes into our hearts—it affects our life: Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) says, “above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Our Heart also affects what comes out of our mouths in unguarded moments.  Luke 6:45 (NIV) shows us that a good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Let’s look at how Dr Wayne Dyer puts it, breaking into a conversation he was having with a student as part of a lecture:
“Why? Why when you squeeze an orange does orange juice come out?” He may have been getting a little exasperated with me at this point. “Well, it’s an orange and that’s what’s inside.”
I nodded. “Let’s assume that this orange isn’t an orange, but it’s you. And someone squeezes you, puts pressure on you, says something you don’t like, offends you. And out of you comes anger, hatred, bitterness, fear. Why? The answer, as our young friend has told us, is because that’s what’s inside.”
It’s one of the great lessons of life.  What comes out when life squeezes you?  When someone hurts or offends you? If anger, pain and fear come out of you, it’s because that’s what’s inside. It doesn’t matter who does the squeezing—your mother, your brother, your children, your boss, the government. If someone says something about you that you don’t like, what comes out of you is what’s inside. And what’s inside is up to you, it’s your choice.
When someone puts the pressure on you and out of you comes anything other than love, it’s because that’s what you’ve allowed to be inside. Once you take away all those negative things you don’t want in your life and replace them with love, you’ll find yourself living a highly functioning life.”

And that is what God wants for us, why He sent His Son to us that we should have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10).

Chapter 4 of Philippians goes on to say in verse 9 that if we do these things, the God of peace shall be with us, the same peace which in verse 7 shall guard our hearts and mind through Christ Jesus.

Prayer
Father, thank You for reminding us of the necessity to pause and meditate.  You are the God of peace and you want nothing more than to share that peace with us.  Help us in our search for knowledge and understanding to grow in Your grace and Knowledge by reflecting on your word.  In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
