Timeless

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen.”
Jude 24-25 (ESVUK)

The Christian author, CS Lewis, wrote in The Four Loves that “there are no tenses in God”. He suggested that time is God’s creation, and that God therefore is outside of as well as in time.

In his brief epistle Jude’s concern is that believers keep themselves in the love of God, “waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life” (verse 21). In that love, he continues, “have mercy on those who doubt” (verse 22). Life can be so pressured for Christians, and it may seem that there is not enough time to do God’s work, or that time stretches out so very long as we anticipate the return of Jesus Christ. Remember, however, Jude explains, who God is and that God is not constrained by time. In God’s eyes we are “those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ” (verse 1).

Thus in his closing remarks Jude stresses once again the majesty and power of God. We need not fear. God, who is not limited by the physical universe in any way, is with us. God is “before all time and now and for ever” (verse 25).

Prayer
Thank you, eternal Father, that your love for us is before the ages and that it is now and forevermore. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
