Jesus of Nazareth

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5 (NIV)

There is only one person, in the long history of the world, in whom the fruit of the Spirit has ever ripened to perfection. That person was Jesus Christ of Nazareth; we come to realise this as we study his character and his lifestyle! A life filled to overflowing with love, he loved in a way that no one else has ever loved. He spoke about his joy and peace; he was amazingly patient with his disciples, always kind, and full of good works. He was also steadfastly reliable, and always gentle, in fact ‘gentle and humble in heart’. Never retaliated, even during his arrest, scourging and crucifixion, ‘he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth”! (Isaiah 53:7). His whole life was an example for you and me; he was love in action! A love that never let go, a love that never gave up, a love that continued to be poured out, no matter what life threw at him!

A missionary in Burundi, Dr. Kenneth Moynagh, once summarized the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22) this way:
Joy is love exalting, and peace is love at rest.
Patience, love enduring, in every trial and test.
Gentleness love yielding to all that is not sin,
Goodness, love in actions that flow from Christ within.
Faith is love’s eyes opened, the living Christ to see,
Meekness, love not fighting but bowed at Calvary.
Temperance, love in harness and under Christ’s control,
The Christ is love in person, and love, Christ in the soul!

Amen to that!

Prayer
Lord, fill our lives with your presence each day, abide in us and help us to abide in you and share the fruits of your love with others.
Amen
