Save Us!

“Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Matthew 21:9 NRSV

Three times in Matthew 21 we read the word ‘hosanna’ meaning ‘oh save!’ and is an exclamation of adoration . Men, women and children are shouting out for salvation from this descendent of King David and prophet who was riding on a donkey, Jesus. Their excitement, passion and desperation can’t be contained because, as we read in Luke 19:40, “if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”

As we prepare for Holy Week, how excited, passionate and desperate are we to once again celebrate with our sisters and brothers in the faith, the wonder and beauty of Jesus, the Saviour? In our hearts and churches our shout should reach heaven: “Save us, save us, save us.” We join the heavenly choir and the chorus of the saints who have gone before in humble and thankful praise of the Lamb.

Perhaps we could join in with the song of the victory we have in Jesus from the Psalmist in Psalm 118:25-29:
”Save us, we beseech you, O Lord!
O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
The Lord is God, and he has given us light.
Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar.
You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you.
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

In offering our praise in the present, we both remember what was done and importantly we are looking forward to Jesus’ return as the King of Kings. This time he won’t be riding on a donkey. He will come in majesty, with power and all who see him will pay homage. Not just the stones will cry out but the whole cosmos.

Prayer
Father, thank you for the gift of salvation. Help us as we celebrate, filled with the Spirit, what we have and look forward to in your beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen
