Light in the Dark

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

My car had an electrical failure last year but it wasn’t until now, five months later that I realised I’d been navigating the dark with sidelights only. Despite the confident display of my dashboard, my main beam was completely gone.

It was scary when suddenly I found myself on a dark country lane, my trusting children in the back commenting with reverence how very dark it was.

How had I gone so long without realising this? It is because up until this dark country lane my path had always been lit on busy roads with lots of other cars or overhead lighting.

Now I was alone.

The panic rising inside me was not dissimilar to that I’ve felt when life gets hard and I don’t have the mental space to lean on God. I find myself searching for God and in the moment I cannot find him. All is dark. In these times I am soothed by a scripture recited by a friend or my Bible when I get home and open it – God’s word lights my path again and the darkness fades.

But what happens when there is no friend, when my Bible is lost or my eyesight fails? What of the dark then?

Of course I know God is with me, and I am not alone but honestly sometimes I struggle to feel God’s presence. So I’m going to follow King David’s lead, and set about learning scripture so that my ‘steps do not slip,’ (Psalm 37:31) so that even in the absence of a Bible or a Christian friend with a good memory, the Word will be with me to light my way…maybe I’ll even be able to help light the way for someone else.

Prayer
God, thank you for the opportunity to learn your word, to set it in my heart so that the way ahead may always be lit. Let me help light the path for others too. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
