Soul Music

“Praise ye the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. While I live will I praise the Lord: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.”
Psalm 146:1-2 (KJV)

What do I mean by soul music? Soul music is a genre of African American popular music that developed in the USA in the late 1950’s. For a period, African Americans weren’t welcome in the churches of white Americans, so they built their own churches and sang Christian hymns and songs, developing a unique style combining gospel, rhythm, blues and jazz. They sang joyful, up-tempo gospel songs while clapping and moving to the beat as well as slower gospel songs that expressed deep heartfelt feelings like yearning for God’s love. They sang from the heart and soul in praise to God. Psalm 71:23 says, “My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.

Jesus said in Matthew 22:36-37 that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This applies to everything we do, including singing. Singing can feed your soul in private as in Ephesians 5:19 where it talks of “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,” or in communal worship spoken of in Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart (soul) to the Lord.”

There are some who would say that they cannot carry a tune. God never asked his people to carry a tune, but to sing unto the Lord and make a joyful noise. Psalm 98:4says, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.” God is not seeking only Christians with brilliant singing voices, although it is a tremendous blessing for those whom God gave such voices. But God is very pleased with His people who sing to Him joyfully and sincerely from their hearts and souls, led by His spirit.

Prayer
Thank you, Father, for the blessing of voices in order that we can sing praises to your holy name. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
