A Little Girl’s Idea

“Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and in high favour, because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria. He was a mighty man of valour, but he was a leper. Now the Syrians on one of their raids had carried off a little girl from the land of Israel, and she worked in the service of Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, ‘Would that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.’”
2 Kings 5:1-3 (ESV)

What if you had an idea that changed the course of history? This is what happened in 2 Kings 5. The great general, “a mighty man of valour”, was a leper. Presumably the leprosy was not so advanced as to limit his capacity to fulfil his position for the King of Syria, but the danger was that it would get much worse and make him unable to continue. It’s in this setting that a little girl has an idea that would help him, even though technically Naaman was her enemy. Naaman was healed of his leprosy, and thereafter we don’t read of his leading the Syrian forces against Israel. Naaman’s whole attitude has changed.

Leprosy was a much feared disease and no cures had been found, even at the time of Jesus, who, in Matthew 8:1-4, healed a leper who had pleaded for him to heal him. “I will,” said Jesus, “be clean”.

These miracles have much meaning for us. If we regard them as not just as historical events, but as parables of salvation, they suggest to us the cleansing of the human race by our Redeemer from the leprosy of sin.

The message of grace is that our sins have been forgiven because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross. Here’s an idea, just like that of the little girl: why not accept God’s forgiveness in Christ?

Prayer
Father, by the help of the Holy Spirit I accept the grace of Jesus. Thank you that I have been forgiven. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
