Do Not Put Off Until Tomorrow…

“For God so loved the World that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16 (NIV)

There are two examples in Luke 13:1-5 of an untimely end for the people concerned. Jesus is told about the Galileans whose blood is mixed with their sacrifices, and Jesus talks about those who were killed when a tower fell on them. Jesus answers their unspoken question saying, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them. Do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” Jesus makes it clear that we should repent from our way of life, to his way of life sooner rather than later, lest we perish. No ifs! no buts!

In Proverbs 14:12 we are told that there is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. The scriptures quoted in Luke 13 refer to two instances which ended in an untimely death for the people involved.

When the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, Pharoah had two dreams and Joseph said that this meant the matter had been fixed by God, because it was given in two forms (Genesis 41:32). In Luke 13 Jesus tells his audience that unless they repent they will perish. Jesus refers to two separate instances where people perish, and this parallels the two forms in Genesis.

But Jesus came to save us from perishing and in John 3.16 we are told. “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Follow the advice of Jesus—do not delay, act now, repent. Do not put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

Prayer
Dear heavenly Father, help us to proclaim our Saviour, Jesus, with the urgency Jesus implies. In Jesus’ name we ask this.
Amen
