Trusting In God

“Do not let your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me.’’
John 14:1 (Amplified Bible)

To believe in Jesus, and trust in him requires faith. And faith is a gift from God. Ephesians 2:8 says “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” There is no point in kidding ourselves that we have faith if we do not believe and trust in Jesus. All believers have been drawn to Christ (John 6:44), and given an initial gift of faith. It has to be developed by walking daily with God. As Christians do that their lives are hidden with Christ in God. He becomes our life. Apart from him, we have no life. He now relates us with the Father. So we can now seek to obey Jesus’ instruction with complete confidence because, even when we fail, Christ is there to reconcile and restore us.

How do we live by this faith or trust? Jesus gave us the answer when he said “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me” (John 6:38). Trusting in God means to be always seeking God’s will in whatever circumstance we find ourselves. That is what Jesus did, and we are living by his faith, not our own, which is weak and unreliable. We read in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Trusting in God is not necessarily as difficult as it may sound. It all depends on who or what you are focused on—yourself and your circumstance or on Jesus Christ. The apostle Peter is a good example. When he was focussed on Jesus, he walked on water; when he took his eyes off Christ and looked at the circumstance, he began to sink! It is the same with us. “Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you” (Psalm 84:12).

Prayer
Heavenly Father, please enable us to allow Jesus to live his life in us by the Spirit, so that we live by his faith which you have given to us. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
