Just One!

“But now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who mediates for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises.”
Hebrews 8:6 (NLT)

Yes! There is only one true Priest who can draw us close to the Father; there is only one Mediator between God and mankind. There is only one offering which is truly acceptable to God—and it’s not ours! It is the offering by which Jesus, our High Priest has sanctified for all time those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 10:10-14). Yes, there’s just One and he is called the Pioneer of our salvation (Hebrews 2:10 NIV).

In this context, we might also consider another verse in Hebrews where we are urged to really think deeply about what Jesus has done for us, what he is doing for us now as High priest, and what he will do in the future as King of Kings! Notice, “Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest (Hebrews 3:1 NIV italics mine). It is he who, in our name and on our behalf, in our humanity, has made one offering to the Father which alone is acceptable to Him for all humanity, for all nations and for all time!

Unfortunately many sincere people still try to get close to the Father by their own religious efforts, not realising that there is only One Way. DIY really means “Don’t Involve Yourself!” Salvation is a precious gift and Jesus himself tells us that he is that Way. “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). The writer to the Hebrews adds to this by declaring that he was “Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2 NKJV). In other words, looking to the one who begins and finishes our faith, and again, He is the only one who can bring that about! You know, we bring nothing to this party, this Covenant—He has done everything for us as our Saviour—we even take on His righteousness because we have none of our own (Philippians 3:7-10).

So—yes—there is Just One who stands before the Father on our behalf pleading our cause; interceding for us in prayer and presenting us as dear children! No wonder the Father tells Peter, James and John “This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to Him” (Mark 9:7).

Prayer
Thank you so much, Father, for our amazing Saviour, Redeemer, High Priest and Friend who leads us into your presence daily.
Amen
