Mind Over Matter

“…the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Job 1:21 (KJV)

When I was in school it was fashionable to decorate our brown paper covered notebooks with slogans. One of my favourites was: Life is a question of mind over matter, I don’t mind and you don’t matter! On first impression it’s not exactly a Christian sentiment but, in our walk with Christ, on reflection, we can find the first part of that sentence is actually true.

Moses knew this and said so in some of his final words in Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (NIV), “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

And later on Joshua also told the Israelites to choose—read Joshua 24:15 “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua chose to serve God.

Job, in the header scripture, who lost everything, chose to bless God in the depths of his troubles when he had lost his children, flocks and wealth.

We have the luxury of freedom to choose. You see, we are all created to be free and in Galatians 5:13 (NIV) we are told “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” There is a song by husband and wife team Beth and Matt Redman which has a lovely line in the bridge which paraphrases the header verse
You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name

And with the power of the Holy Spirit, we now have help when we, too, can choose. It really is that simple—just a question of mind over matter.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, We thank you for life and ask that Your Spirit be with us always so that we can choose to say, like Your servant Job, “Blessed be Your name.”
Amen
