“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.”
1 Peter 1:3-5 (NIV)
Would you like the story of your life to have a different ending?
Film makers sometimes adapt well-known books by giving them a new ending. For example, a recent release of Dickens’ Great Expectations is reported to have a revised ending. Dickens himself had supplied two possible conclusions for this classic novel.
In the story of Great Expectations, Pip thought he was going to inherit money from Miss Havisham, but in the end his hopes were dashed. However, he did receive an inheritance from a totally unexpected source. Many expect their reward or inheritance to come from their own efforts in this physical life, but as it says in Matthew 6:19-21 we need to store up the true treasures that endure past this life. Our inheritance is from Jesus Christ who died as a ransom for sin so that we can receive the promised eternal inheritance (Hebrews 9:15).
The Bible explains God’s desire to change the outcome of our life. We have free will, but we have chosen a path that leads only to the destruction of the soul and spirit. “Why let this happen?” says God. It does not have to be where your life ends up. There is hope of a new life beyond the here and now and beyond our physical death. God sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die in our stead so that we may live forever with him. Thus God has great expectations for us.
Paul, a first century Christian writer, put it this way. “Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master” (Romans 6:23 THE MESSAGE).
Give your life a new ending. Accept the grace of Christ.
Prayer Thank you that we can have new life giving us an ending with the great expectation of eternal life through your son, Jesus, in whose name we pray.
