We Are Family
“Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honour the emperor.”
1 Peter 2:17 (NIV)
“We Are Family” is a popular and well known song by the all-female group, Sister Sledge. It is a very catchy and lively dance tune – and if you so desire, it can be heard on YouTube. The chorus line is “We are family, I got all my sisters with me. We are family, get up everybody and sing. We are family.”
Another song with a similar title by Ross Jutsum has the following lyrics in the chorus line: “We are family, now and forever. Like jewels for the kingdom prepare. With our loved ones we cherish and treasure. The wonderful memories we share.”
Most of humanity are either born or adopted into a family, which is absolutely essential for the nurture and care of children. As believers, we are placed into God’s spiritual family, where we have both sisters and brothers. 1 John 3:1 says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” What a blessing, privilege and honour to be counted as one of the Father’s children. Literally, a brother or sister of Jesus Christ!
As members of the family of God, we love our brothers and sisters in Christ. And we love our flesh and blood family members, many of whom are non-believers. We are deeply concerned and care about them. We would like to see them become believers.
So, what is our responsibility? It is to pray for our family, friends and neighbours. That God will grant these gifts to them and draw them to Christ, while we witness the love of Jesus in our relationship with them. For God also loves our family members, friends and neighbours. They may not yet know about his love for them. He knows them better than we do, and at the right time will draw them to Jesus. We can and must trust his wisdom. We look forward to the time when they respond to his amazing grace and love.
Father in heaven, thank you for the love that you have lavished on us. Please grant to our loved ones who do not yet know you, the gifts of faith and repentance, and in accordance with your will, draw them to Jesus. In his name we pray.
