Children, Parents, Health And Long Life

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  ‘Honour your father and mother,’ which is the first commandment with promise: ‘that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.’”
Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV)

God is very interested in children and desires the very best for them.

When God gave the Ten Commandments to Israel he included a commandment specifically for children, and it was the first commandment that carried with it a direct promise.  Bound up in this instruction is a means to something we all want; wellness and longevity.

Today medical science has discovered the effect of the mind over the body.  We see the direct relationship between the state of the mind and the state of the body.  When the mind is at peace, so is the body, and the mind is at peace when it is free from anxiety and worry.

We are often told of the importance of a happy home-life; the sense of security and feeling of worth and value that comes from a loving, encouraging environment.  This is the role largely of mum and dad to create, but children can play a valuable part in this process.  Every member of the family has a part to play in creating this loving environment and the contribution children can make is obedience.

Obedience is a statement of love.  Jesus pointed this out for us on the evening he was to be betrayed leading to him lay down his life as a sacrifice for us when he told his disciples, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15 NKJV)

When we consider the sacrifices that our parents have made for us, they surely are worthy of our love, and one way we can show that love is in obedience.  As the headline scripture indicates this obedience will have real benefits; wellness and long life.

Prayer
Father in heaven, thank you for the wonderful blessing of children and family life.  Help us, whether parents or children, to make our contribution to the well-being of our family.
Amen
