Watch Our Words
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV)
Our words are very powerful—they can inspire and help, but they can also hurt and offend.
The Bible tells us that if we do not control our tongue our religion is useless: “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” (James 1:26)
Satan tries to steal, kill and destroy. He wants to cause discord in any way that he can (John 10:10). Discord and division are of Satan. Unity, love, joy and peace are the fruit of the Holy Spirit and are from God. (Galatians 5:22)
Our thoughts lead to our words, so the only way we can control our words is to control our thoughts. This takes effort on our part, but when we put forward the effort, the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to succeed! Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:8 reminds us, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” The way that we do this is to die to self and live for Jesus. (Romans 6:9-11)
Heavenly Father, lead us to think thoughts and speak words that are pleasing to you.
