Why The Gospel Travels

“In the Messiah, in Christ, God leads us from place to place in one perpetual victory parade. Through us, he brings knowledge of Christ. Everywhere we go, people breathe in the exquisite fragrance.”
2 Corinthians 2:14 (MSG)

Have you ever wondered why salmon swim up rivers and waterfalls to spawn? Or migrating birds travel great distances to lay their eggs and then against all the odds fly back home? Similarly, have you ever wondered why the Gospel travels as it has these past 2000 years?

Well, like the salmon and the birds, the gospel travels to bring new life. A new creation for humanity to become children of God, born from above. Each of these have their starting point in God, the Creator of everything.

The Gospel travels because God so loves us and gave His only begotten Son. The message traveled from heaven to earth. Jesus Christ began his ministry by announcing, “The time promised by God has come at last!…The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!” (Mark 1:15 NLT).

Ever since that time, He has been calling men and women out of this world to join Him on an incredible journey, and has given us a mission as we go. We know that we can’t save others but, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can tell them that Jesus can. Yes, we are travelers with the message of life and hope. We share with all, that they can be delivered out of this present evil world and escape condemnation.

As the Apostle Paul says, “Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this?” (2 Corinthians 2:15-16 NLT).

It is a message of love through Jesus. His saving grace in our lives causes us to be filled with thanksgiving for what our Saviour has done. In turn, we have a desire to reach out to those who are dead (as we were), to bring the light of the Gospel to those God brings across our path. We remember that He is the way and the life.

So we travel with the Gospel. Our feet have been fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. We have beautiful feet for traveling with the Good News. (Romans 10:15 NLT) Let’s remember then, we travel as Ambassadors of Christ, Heralds of the Gospel and Proclaimers of the love of God in Jesus Christ as Saviour of the world. (2 Corinthians 5:18-20 NLT)

Prayer
Loving Father, thank you for calling us to travel with the Gospel to a needy world. Please give us the strength we need for the journey.
Amen

The Heavens Declare The Glory Of God

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
Psalm 19:1 (NIV)

The earth is a giant space ship travelling around the sun at a perfect speed and a perfect orbit. God has provided the earth with everything that is needed to maintain every living thing he has created.

When we look into the heavens beyond our galaxy we see countless other galaxies which all work in perfect harmony with each other. All of the physical creation is governed by laws, which God set in motion.

Human beings are beginning to understand the laws of physics; the laws which enable us to transmit radio, television and mobile phone signals; the laws which enable an aeroplane to fly though the air at great speed. Everything that we enjoy, and often take for granted in our modern world, only works because these laws are completely dependable! If these laws failed all physical things would be destroyed. But we need not fear, for these laws will not fail as long as there is a physical creation!

When a person opens their eyes and looks closely at the wonder of everything in the physical world, they see the evidence of God and his creative powers: “being understood from what has been made” (Romans 1:20). Only the fool says, “There is no God”. (Psalm 14:1),

Prayer
Father, God, open our eyes so that we can see your glory in the wonder that is all around us.
Amen

He Knows Y’Know!

“O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.”
Psalm 139:1 (NLT)

Hilda Baker was a diminutive British comedienne in the first half of the 20th century. She performed with a tall, sullen, silent companion. The latter was a foil for Hilda’s humour. Hilda’s popular catchphrase was ‘she knows y’know!’ No-one understood what the companion named Cynthia actually knew; the humour was in the irony when applied to the gormless friend. The wit was specific to northern England – dry and sardonic; however the catchphrase was recognised nationally.

It is disconcerting and bewildering when there is an implication that someone knows something about you that no-one else knows. How embarrassing would it be if people could read our minds?

We are told in God’s word that God knows us wholly. King David in Psalm 139 describes how much God knows about us. As we read in the heading scripture, verse 1 says, “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.” There is no hiding place for us. Is this bad news? Should we be afraid? Quite the contrary, we have God’s blessing. Verse 5 says, “You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.” Why would we want to escape from a God who goes ahead of us and covers our back as well? We are never alone. We are cherished and loved despite our human frailties. Our God loves every inch of us – every hair on our head – so much so that He suffered the sacrifice of His perfect Son. This knowledge has amazed Christians for centuries, and we read in verse 6, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!”

From time to time as human beings we experience fear, trauma, depression, loneliness and many other negative emotions. These are feelings that are natural but distressing. Try to remember that God is with you wherever you turn. He is there, talk to him; it is what he is waiting for. Tell him you have no idea how he knows you so well, but you are so glad that he does!

Prayer
Great God, thank you so much for your incredible love—your very name is ‘love.’ The knowledge that you are with us always gives us strength when times are difficult. You understand our strengths and our weakness, and love us anyway – Father we thank you.
Amen

What if the Sky Should Fall?

“So when they met together, they asked him [Jesus], ‘Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’”
Acts 1:6-8 (NIV UK)

I have some good news and bad news. NASA has predicted that the Andromeda Galaxy, which is hurtling towards us at 250,000 miles an hour, will collide with our Milky Way galaxy, scattering stars, including our sun, in all directions. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it won’t happen for about 4 billion years. Even so, it will probably give the end-of-the-world doomsayers something else to worry us with.

How, then, should we Christians view world events in the light of prophecy? Matthew 24:6-8 says: “You will hear of wars and rumours of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.”

So, what does Bible prophecy tell us about world events? It says that lots of bad things are going to happen, and some people are going to be led astray by those events, concluding that the end is near, but that we shouldn’t follow their lead and believe it. “If they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is [coming in the year 2014], do not believe it” (Matthew 24:26). Matthew 24, verse 36 stresses, “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”

So, yes, the Bible predicts that bad stuff will happen, and we are seeing that being fulfilled all around us; these words of Jesus have been in the process of being fulfilled for nearly 2,000 years now. We, however, might want to know just how much longer. But the Bible specifically avoids answering that question. Apparently we, and even Jesus in his earthly life, don’t need to know. That’s how we should approach world events. Bible prophecy also tells us that people will make erroneous claims about the timing of the return of Christ, and that’s being fulfilled all around us.

The real point about Bible prophecy is not that we should watch world events, but that we should watch ourselves. When the end does come, we want to be found faithful. Just knowing a date will not earn us our ticket into salvation. The point of the prophecies is not to enable prediction, but to foster faithfulness, and our faith should not be based on speculation but on the character of the one who promises and prophesies.

We live in an unstable world, and we will see ups and downs. We are to live in the same way regardless of whether the end is near or far. Jesus told one of his parables to people who thought the kingdom of God was going to appear right away (Luke 19:11); he told other parables about people who thought it was going to be a long way off (Matthew 25:5). We are not supposed to base our behaviour, or our faith, on whether it is near or far—the Christian life remains the same.

So, in the light of Bible prophecy, take note of world events—watching them go up and down, getting better and worse—but don’t base your Christian life on them. Remember Jesus’ very last words to his disciples (quoted above).

Prayer
Holy Father, you who know the end from the beginning. Help us to leave all timings to you, because you know the best time for events to happen. Help us instead to concentrate on what you want us to do in living our lives daily walking with you.
Amen

Magna Carta (Part 2)

“But the scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.”
Galatians 3:22 (NIV)

The year 2015 will mark the 800th anniversary of when King John put his seal to the text of Magna Carta at a meeting with his barons at Runnymede in 1215. Commemorations of important events leading up to Runnymede will also be held in the next two years. The British lawyer and Judge, Lord Denning described Magna Carta as, “the greatest constitutional document of all times – the foundation of the freedom of the individual against the arbitrary authority of the despot.” Magna Carta was so fundamental to the US constitution of 1787 that the American Bar Association erected a monument at Runnymede to acknowledge the debt American law had to this document.

In his commentary on Paul’s epistle to the Galatians, published in the NIV Bible Commentary (1994), J.M. Boyce wrote, “This letter has been called the Magna Carta of Christian liberty, for it maintains that only through the grace of God received through faith in Jesus Christ can a person escape the curse of sin and of the law and live a new life, not in bondage or license, but in genuine freedom of mind and spirit through the power of God.”

In the scripture quoted above Paul declares that the whole of humanity is a prisoner to sin and the only way they can escape this imprisonment and be given “what was promised” by God is by faith in (Greek “of”) Jesus Christ. Paul begins his letter by stating that God called the Galatians “by the grace of Christ.” (Galatians 1:6). He then goes on to declare that in Christ we have freedom but this should not be taken for granted or be misunderstood, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1).

The gospel of grace with its pronouncement of liberty, into which the Galatians and all believers are called, is not a liberty that leads to license, as some who try to mix grace and law claim. “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather serve one another in love.” (Galatians 5:13) Paul announces in his letter to the Galatians that we have been set free, but that freedom is to be used to live a life of love and service not license.

Prayer
Father, we thank you that you have called us by grace into freedom, and not to the bondage of license. Help us to bear the fruit of your spirit and live a life worthy of our calling.
Amen

Reverence

“When they see the purity and reverence of your lives…”
1 Peter 3:2 (NIV UK)

The word “reverence” is one of those terms that can be difficult to understand.

The context of the verse above is quite specific. It is explaining how the wives of unbelievers might win their husbands over through exemplary behaviour.

There is also a broader context. Peter has been contrasting the Christ-less life to the Christ-filled life. He has been emphasizing that, with the freedom that comes from knowing Christ and being known by him, comes the responsibility of being holy just as God himself is holy. “Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all that you do” (1:15). The word “holy” has its origin in the ideas of separation and difference. Peter’s view is that we should be seen to be different because we have been separated by the grace given to us in Christ. “Therefore”, says Peter, “prepare your minds for action” (1:13).

How do we do this? How do we prepare our minds for spiritual, holy action? This is where the idea of reverence comes in, according to Peter. “Live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear” (1:17), he explains: but what does he mean?

One of the best definitions I have come across for “reverence” is from William Barclay’s The Letters of James and Peter, which was published in 1958 and re-printed by Saint Andrew Press, Edinburgh in 1976 and 2003. On page 217 Barclay writes, “Reverence is the attitude of mind of those who are always aware that they are in the presence of God”. Such people are holy because they are different from others who reject or are ignorant of God’s presence.

Are we aware that we are always in the presence of God? And, being aware of his presence within us and around us, do we let this moderate our behaviour and approach to everything?

If we have that attitude of mind, as Peter says, people will see the purity and reverence of our lives.

Prayer
Help me, Father, through the abiding Holy Spirit, to be holy in all that I do. Let your eternal presence change me daily as I live Christ’s life in me.
In Jesus’ name
Amen

I’m Sorry!

“Be alert. If you see your friend going wrong, correct him. If he responds, forgive him. Even if it’s personal against you and repeated seven times through the day, and seven times he says, ‘I’m sorry, I won’t do it again,’ forgive him.”
Luke 17:3-4 (MSG)

The phrase ‘love means never having to say you’re sorry’ comes from the 1970’s tearjerker ‘Love Story’ by Erich Segal – and when you’re a teenager, like I was during the 1970’s, it sounded really romantic. And though I can still happily watch this film today, (the theme music is simply haunting), I don’t agree with its most quoted line.

I believe love is being able to say you are sorry. I consider as a Christian we should apologise to people, ie to articulate a verbal regret when it is within our power to do so. That’s because as Christians, hard as it is sometimes, we need to love people as Christ loved us. Ephesians 5:2 (NLT) exhorts us to, “Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.”

Bible translations do not use the word ‘apologise’ though it does contain apologies, eg Stephen (Acts 7) and Paul (Acts 26). The word apology originates from the Greek word ‘apologia’ meaning ‘a speech in defence’. Apologetics is the label given to the discipline of defending a position, usually religious. It was later used to denote ‘a frank expression of regret for wrong doing’; specifically in the English language its primary sense is ‘a plea for forgiveness for a wrong act‘, which today we recognise as ‘saying sorry’. The word ‘sorry’ dates from the 13th century and comes from Old English meaning ‘distressed or full of sorrow’.

A word the Bible does use though, is ‘repent’, which is sometimes translated as sorry, eg Genesis 6:6 (KJV) says, “And it repented the Lord that he made man on the earth…” and the NKJV put is, “And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth…”

An inextricable part of being human is that throughout life we hurt and offend people. More often than not it will be those we spend time with most, those who are closest to us, and perhaps those we think we can treat in a way that is unlikely to provoke retaliation, i.e. our spouses, our children, our parents, our work colleagues, fellow Christians or church members.

Customer Care departments who deal daily with complaints are often told to apologise to a customer because it diffuses their hurt and anger, and can lead them to a place where the complaint can be dealt with more objectively. So why do many find it so hard to apologise, even when they do actually feel sorry for the pain they’ve caused someone? Is it a matter of pride? Proverbs 16:18 (NIV UK) tells us, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall”, and in 18:12 we read, “Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honour.” So is it because it is an admission that we have done something inappropriate and articulating an apology would make this more concrete or indicate weakness? 1 John 1:8-9 (NKJV) says, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us all from unrighteousness.”

Saying sorry is about acknowledging our actions or words were hurtful to another person and taking responsibility for our actions. Crucially, apologising restores relationships.

God has paid the ultimate price for us – we are under grace – so does that mean we don’t have to repent any longer? Of course not! We need to go to God daily to ask for forgiveness, to say ‘I’m sorry’.

We might be sorry we hurt someone; we might ask God to forgive us for this transgression; we might endeavour not to repeat such offense; but does that mean we shouldn’t apologise? True repentance is saying we are sorry and changing our behaviour. Let’s remember Paul’s words in Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV), “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

We can’t make people say sorry to us—but as Christians we can set the example by being the ones to say we are sorry when we have hurt them.

Prayer
Lord, please help me to say sorry to those I hurt either inadvertently or on purpose.
Amen

The Boatbuilding Preacher!

“Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.”
Genesis 6:11 (NIV)

The flood distinctly marks the end of one order of things and the beginning of another. A man called Noah was chosen by God to be the one to make provision for the continuation of all human and animal life on earth when the deluge was over.

You might ask, “Why was this man chosen out of all the people of the world?” The answer as you might guess is; “This is the account of Noah…Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.” (Genesis 6:9). The apostle Peter calls him, “a preacher of righteousness” in 2 Peter 2: 5. We don’t know a lot more about this individual except that he was obedient to the call of God. He built a gigantic vessel hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean. No doubt he became a laughingstock and perhaps was even called “Crazy Noah” by everyone who witnessed the construction of the Ark. But he held on to his faith and toiled year after year to fulfil God’s purpose. While sawing wood and hammering nails this “preacher of righteousness” faithfully witnessed to the godless unbelievers around him about the end of one age and the beginning of another—but no one listened!

Notice Hebrews 11:7 tells us about this amazing servant of God in what we call the faith chapter, “By faith Noah, when warned about things yet not seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.”

Jesus had something to say about the evil days in which Noah lived, while answering a question posed by the Pharisees about the time of the coming of the Kingdom of God. He replied; “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.” (Luke 17:26) The people then were doing all of these things but one thing they weren’t doing was listening. “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.”(verse 30)

It is this future time of the end of one era and the beginning of another that Christian voices witness about today and hopefully someone is listening! Are you? We can choose to turn to God today.

Prayer
Father, please give your children power and the gift of faithfulness today as they witness about the return of your beloved Son as King of Kings and Lord of Lords to bring peace to this troubled world.
Amen

Our Future Certainty

“But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift … for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”
Ephesians 4:7, 12 (NKJV UK)

Hebrews concludes its list of foundational items for the Christian, with “eternal judgment” (Hebrews 6:2). Paul ends with a wish that he might have opportunity to expand and expound on this list, and, Oh!, do we wish that he had done so.

As the book of Revelation explains, and is beyond our space here to elaborate, at the end of time there will be a general resurrection of all the dead and then a time of judgment. Traditionally this is understood how mankind judges: there are two sides, one is right and the other wrong and all are to be judged against those two sides, and whichever is stronger (weightier; whichever side the scales of justice come down upon), you make it or you don’t.

That’s how the Egyptians saw their eternal future. At death, if the Pharaoh’s sins were heavier than a feather, he would be hauled off to be devoured by jackals and denied eternal life with his gods.

But that’s not how Christianity works. We have all sinned, even if only once, and that is enough, according to God’s just rule of law, to have condemned ourselves to death for ever.

For a Christian, God’s justice works entirely differently: “For when we were still without strength [better: power], in due time Christ died for the ungodly. … Therefore, as through one man’s offence judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life” (Romans 5:6, 18). When we accept Christ’s sacrifice, our sins which condemn us are all washed away in the blood of Christ. And we continue, resurrected into a life of walking with the Spirit, uncondemned, unafraid of the judgment to come: “There is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:1). Our future is secure, because we are seen by God according to his Son’s perfection, rather than our own continuing imperfection. As Christ was righteous ‘enough’ to be resurrected, that righteousness of his has been attributed to us, and we will therefore be resurrected. That’s the hope and belief of a Christian, and a Christian need have no fear of the future resurrection.

As noted before, each of these foundational concepts builds, the next upon the previous, to the point where we can stand tall as Christians, coming boldly to God, seeking to do and be his will, striving to live as Christ lived among us, going on to the perfection that is in Christ. This foundation of ours is in fact rock solid, unshakable and perfect. And we do well from time to time to consider how far a Christian has come just in understanding these foundational truths. Yet Paul tells us this is only just the beginning….

Prayer
Heavenly Father, we are all babes in Christ. When we think we are more, we in fact deceive ourselves. Our fervent prayer is that we go on to live this life with you, that we may go on to maturity, ending in the perfection that is in Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”
Matthew 18:10 (NIV UK)

Has God intervened in your life? There are times when there can be no other answer. Twice I have been involved in car accidents or near misses when I thanked God for his protection.

Many years ago, I was driving through the Mersey Tunnel where traffic was moving in both directions. A car coming towards me had a tyre blow out and it came careering over towards my car. There were four people in my car returning home from church. The out-of-control car came over to the next lane but when it was about to hit me, it miraculously veered over to the other side. We were not harmed at all. God was listening to instant prayers and protected us.

Another time, I had my youngest daughter in the front passenger seat, when I fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a lamp post, destroying the nearside front wheel. With three wheels on the car, I miraculously steered the car between a sandstone wall and sign post. The car stopped one inch from, and parallel to, the six foot stone wall. My daughter woke up and said, “Mum, why have you stopped?” No one was hurt. I believe a guardian angel had helped me stop safely and protected my daughter.

We can say with King David in Psalm 4:8, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

Prayer
Father, thank you for intervening in our lives, saving and protecting the children you have blessed.
Amen
